PIMCO has taken out the honour of Fund Manager of the Year at the Professional Planner | Zenith Fund Awards.

PIMCO also won the Global and Diversified Fixed Interest category. The other finalists for Fund Manager of the Year were Magellan Asset Management and Platinum Asset Management.

The Zenith judges praised PIMCO’s geographically diverse investment team, scalable research process, and integrated risk management framework, which the funds researcher said equipped the manager with the ability to support its expansive investment platform.

The winners in 19 categories were revealed to a packed luncheon at the Ivy Ballroom in Sydney on Friday.

The other top award, Distributor of the Year, was awarded to Pinnacle Investment Partners for the second year in a row. Bennelong Australian Equity Partners won the gong for the Australian equities Large Cap category. Perennial Value Management won best small cap Australian equities manager and Solaris Investment Management was awarded best Australian equities – alternative (including long/short, income overlay options). Winners of each of the categories are outlined below.

The annual awards recognise excellence in funds management, as judged by Zenith’s robust methodology, which examines each manager’s investment philosophy, the expertise of the investment team, the investment process, portfolio construction, risk management and performance, Zenith Investment Partners general manager & head of research, Bronwen Moncrieff, explained.

Moncrieff said it was particularly difficult for active managers in some sectors to outperform this year, due to historically low volatility, and the winners had done exceptionally well.

Professional Planner congratulates all winners and finalists.

Full coverage of the awards, including interviews with the winners about their strategies, will be included in Professional Planner online and the November magazine. A photo gallery from the day will be online next week.
